Who Needs A Differential Anyway?

Lexington, OH – Co-op Racing headed to Lexington, OH to compete in the 2nd annual National Auto Sport Association National event. Co-op Racing used most of the season preparing for this event. The race weekend started off well with the Eurosport 944 quickest in the first practice session of the weekend. Unfortunately, transaxle issues limited the progress of the Eurosport 944 leading up to the first qualifying race. Driver Andy Berberich and the Eurosport 944 finished in 6th out of 18 after the first qualifying race of the weekend.

The NASA Nationals are structured with two 20 minute qualifying races, which determines the
starting grid for the 40 minute Championship race. Each qualifying race had its own qualifying session in order to set their grid. The Eurosport 944 raced in Group E for the weekend, and the final results can be found on the NASA website.

Three practice sessions on Thursday kicked off the race weekend. After the first practice session, Berberich and the Eurosport 944 was fastest in class. As the day progressed, the rest of the field began to go faster and drop lap times. About half way through the first day of practice, Berberich noticed excessive rear wheel spin in the turns. As the day progressed, the wheel spin got worse. “I couldn’t put the power down to pull out of the turns” said Berberich of the situation. “None of us in the class have a lot of power, but not being able to apply the power just kills lap times.” It was determined that the transaxle’s limited slip differential had gone out and progressively got worse as time when on.

Even with the faulty transaxle, Berberich was able to qualify the Eurosport 944 in 7th of the 19 car field. The team made suspension adjustments in order to counteract the handling issue. Modifications were effective, yielding the 7th place qualification. After the five lap twenty minute qualifying race, the Eurosport 944 had advanced a position and finished 6th in class. This finish was important because it was part of what determined the starting grid for the Championship race.

Knowing that the field was getting progressively faster, the team knew that the 1:44.6 lap time would not be very competitive. The team devised a plan to band-aid the differential issue. With one practice day and one qualifying race behind them, the team was looking to improve performance moving through the rest of the weekend.
