Eurosport 944 Places 2nd in the Road America Sprint After Additional Repairs

Elkhart Lake, WI – Co-op Racing returned to Road America after coming off a wreck, repair, and
successful enduro race the day before. Still uncertain of the reliability of the Eurosport 944,
driver Andy Berberich drove to a second in class during the 30-minute sprint race. This time, the
Eurosport 944 was plagued with a wheel bearing failure, which originated from Saturday’s early
morning incident. Regardless of the issues, the team was able to successful complete the weekend
and Berberich accomplished a personal goal in the process.
After a good night’s sleep and well-earned rest for Co-op Racing, the team was anxious

to hit the track and again reap the rewards of their hard work. Monday started with a 15-minute early morning warm up.
This was yet another well needed opportunity to shake down the Eurosport 944. During the last lap of the
warm up session, Berberich felt a vibration when making right hand turns. He quickly determined that a
wheel bearing had gone bad on the same corner that was damaged in the accident. In order to repair the
wheel bearing before qualifying, the team would have to complete the work in less than 90 minutes. Again,
the preparation and resources of Eurosport Racing enabled
the repairs to be completed in time. Eurosport Racing provides trackside support for fully prepared
Porsche GT cars as well as mildly prepared Porsche stock class cars. Their knowledge and stock of tools
and parts make them prepared for most unexpected track incidences. Shortly after the early morning
practice, Berberich began removing the left-front hub in order to gain access to the wheel bearings. In
order to complete the work in time for qualifying, Brian Weathered of Eurosport Racing assisted Berberich
in the repair. “I was so glad that Brian was able to help.” Berberich commented. “A wheel bearing repair
is not a very difficult procedure, but performing the task under a time constraint becomes challenging.
With Brian’s help, we were able to knock it out in no time.”
As Berberich was suiting up for the qualifying session, Bryan White of Co-op Racing completed the repair
work. With little time to spare, Berberich headed to the grid with the Eurosport 944. “I set a goal after
the first practice session on Saturday,” Berberich remembered. “My fastest lap time after Saturday’s first
session was a 2:52.7, which was the same as last year’s fastest lap. I set a goal of bringing my lap times
down into the 2.4X. After Saturday’s accident, I wasn’t sure if that goal would be possible. Just as Michael
Benet of Kauth and Mayeur had expected, I was surprised. We were discussing the accident and the proposed
fixes and how uncertain I was of the cars pending performance and my resulting lap times. Michael, from years
of racing experience, said that I would be surprised with the actual performance. I was most certainly
surprised as I turned a personal best lap time of 2:48.5.” The personal best for Berberich was good enough
to qualify the Eurosport 944 second in class.
Luckily for Co-op Racing, the 30-minute enduro started and ended with few incidences. The sprint race on the
4-mile 14 turns of Road America was completed in 12 laps. The Eurosport 944 finished second in class out of
five cars and finished 27th in the group of 40 cars.
Regardless of Saturday’s accident and the hard work put forth by Co-op Racing, the team considers the weekend
a success. The team’s hard work paid off with two second place finishes at a world class track like Road
America. Co-op Racing was also the source of some entertainment as many passerbies kept track of the repair
process. The highlight of the repair process was Kacey Berberich’s self-proclaimed “dirt track” repair
technique on the crumpled fender.
The Eurosport 944 is now in need of some long-term repair, but will be ready for its next race. The Eurosport
944 plans to return to Road America to compete with the National
Auto Sport Association on October 21 and 22. This may be the last race of 2006 for the Eurosport 944, so mark
your calendar and plan to attend if you can.
