Handling Woes Resolved, But Radiator Issues Prevailed For Co-op Racing

Elkhart Lake, WI – Co-op Racing returned to Road America on Labor Day in order
to compete in The Road America Challenge 40 minute sprint race. Andy Berberich and the Eurosport 944 completed the 90 minute enduro the
day before where they brought home the first in class victory. With the first race completed, Co-op Racing focused their sites on resolving the
handling issues. Even with the issues resolved, a leaking radiator prematurely ended the weekend for the Eurosport 944.
Through the process of trial and error and engineering judgment, the team concluded that there was something fundamentally wrong with the

Porsche 944s handle really well right out of the box. To have significant handling issues, there must be something significantly wrong with the car. Before
leaving for the day, the team then decided to double check the suspension alignment for inconsistencies.
Lucky for Co-op Racing, they were able to use the alignment platform of The Racer’s Group,
which so happens to be the same team that Co-op Racing crewed for at The Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona. With the car on the rack and specialty
measure tools provided by Eurosport Racing, Berberich and team supporter Shawn Clary began checking the alignment. It was determined that the rear
suspension was the cause of the handling woes, due to being far out of alignment specs. The handling characteristics described by Berberich
were consistent with how the status of the rear alignment would cause the car to handle. With help from Nick and Andre of Eurosport Racing, the
Eurosport 944 was brought back to life.
Monday morning’s 20 minute warm up session was an opportunity for Berberich to evaluate the changes made to the car. “The car was much more stable
under braking” Berberich remarked. “It was much more predictable and I could carry more speed through and out of the turns. It was like a whole new
car.” A twenty minute session is not very long to really bring the car up to speed, but it was however enough time to show significant improvement
for the weekend. Even with passing a slower car in Turn 7, Berberich was able to put down a lap almost one second faster than his best 2006 lap time.
When the session came to an end, Berberich was excited that the car was back and that the lap times would continue to drop as he regained confidence
in the car.
Unfortunately, the radiator started to leak water after the warm up session. Assuming it was a water pump, the team topped off the cooling system
and entered the track for qualifying. Just into the third lap of qualifying, Berberich noticed that the Eurosport 944 was beginning to overheat. Not
wanting to damage the engine, Berberich pulled it off the track and did not finish the qualifying session.
Unable to procure another radiator, the weekend was prematurely ended for the Co-op Racing and the Eurosport 944. With the handling issues resolved,
the team was pleased with the cars performance. The alignment issues were found and resolved, which is especially important as the team sets its
sites on the NASA Nationals at Mid Ohio
September 14-16. This year the NASA Nationals can be tracked live through the NASA web site.
