Blackhawk Farms Was Unkind To Me

South Beloit, IL – Co-op Racing returned to Blackhawk Farms for the second time in the 2009 season. Traffic and the track were not kind to driver Andy Berberich and the Eurosport 944. The resulting two thirds and one second brings the 2008 944 Spec National Champion Eric Kuhns significantly closer to Berberich who is the current series points leader.

Saturday started with rain in qualifying, which resulted in Berberich qualifying third behind Kuhns and Ray Freundt. At the start of the race, heavy traffic forced Berberich off track and into a spin. With no contact, Berberich
was able to bring the Eurosport 944 to stop in the middle of the track facing the right direction. “I was glad that no one hit me” Berberich sighed with relief. “I went four wheels off and was perpendicular to the track for a little while. I reentered the track and the car whipped around to face up track. Luckily it was still running and I grabbed first gear and took off.” Regaining the lost positions, Berberich moved his way through the pack to finish in third place. Kuhns and Freundt swapped the lead a couple of times before finishing first and second, respectively.

Saturday’s second race grid was set by fastest lap times from the first, with Kuhns and Berberich in the front row followed by Freundt in the second row. The three drivers all led during the race – Berberich on lap one. Kuhns & Freundt got by in traffic; with Kuhns taking the lead on lap two, only to have Freundt grab the lead by lap three! Using a BMW M3 as a pick, Kuhns got by Freundt for good shortly thereafter, leaving Berberich & Freundt to pass & repass each other in traffic. “Ray (Freundt) and I had a great race going until the M3 got in the way” Berberich remarked. “Ray and I were racing in class and the M3 wasn’t racing anyone. Ray got by and I was stuck. The M3 was awfully slow in the corners and wouldn’t let me back into our race on the straightaway.” By the time the Eurosport 944 made it through traffic, Fruendt and Kuhns were nowhere to be seen.

Sunday started with the same grid order as the last race. This time it was Berberich who picked his way through the Spec Miatas to establish a clear early lead. Kuhns & Freundt went nose to tail and gradually reeled in the Eurosport 944. Berberich overdrove turn six, which allowed Freundt to get beside him in turn seven. This gave Freundt and Kuhns the opportunity to pass the Eurosport 944 and the three cars went down the front straight in tight formation. Jockeying for position into turn one, Freundt stayed out ahead, Kuhns slotted into second, and Berberich was moved back to third. Kuhns’ elation lasted all of 100 feet, when he went to shift to fourth and found… nothing. A loose c-clip in the transmission linkage left him in third gear, for good, and he retired the next lap. Freundt & Berberich had an epic battle for the duration of the race, sometimes side by side in fast sections of the track. With relentless pressure from Berberich, Freundt finishes with his first win of the year. Berberich rolled across the finish in second.

With the season coming into its final stretch, Berberich remains the points leader and Kuhns keeps his hopes alive with a strong weekend, notching two first place finishes. After the allowable season race drops, Kuhns is a mere 10 points behind Berberich.
