Gremlins Plague Co-op Racing's Final Day At Mid America Motorplex

Pacific Junction, IA – Co-op Racing continued its weekend of racing with NASA on July 1st, 2007.
Racing continued at Mid America Motorplex except for the
#18 American Iron Firebird of Co-op Racing. The Pontiac was plagued with power issues for driver Andy Berberich’s practice,
qualifying, and race sessions. The weekend ended with issues still to be resolved before the next race weekend.
Day two began with Berberich in the Pontiac and Co-op Racing driver Bryan White in the Eurosport 944. The driver change
is a strategy implemented by Co-op Racing in order to develop Berberich and White into more diversified drivers. Unfortunately

Berberich took the Firebird out for qualifying, it would loose power in the turns and hesitate and
then finally find power on the straights. Berberich immediately brought the car into the pit.
He had this to say. “I couldn’t figure out what was happening. It seemed like the engine was being starved of fuel when
I drove into a turn. The car was no where near speed and I didn’t want to cause any damage to it.” The car was brought
into the pit where 5 gallons of gas was added to the previous 5 gallon fill. Berberich returned to the track during the
same practice session, but no improvement was found.
Between the practice and qualifying session, White and fellow racer Bob Denton discussed possible causes. Prior to
qualifying, the fuel filter was changed and the carburetor was checked for possible over fueling. Unfortunately, the
fuel filter did not solve the problem.
Prior to the race, the carburetor floats were removed and a needle valve was found to have been sticking. The valve
was repaired and Berberich took the track with no practice to start the race in the American Iron class. Learning to
drive 375hp on the edge of control is a daunting task. Let alone starting a race with very little practice. However,
the power issue again was not resolved. Berberich returned to the pits where White made one more carburetor change in
order to address the problem.
The weekend ended with disappointment for the entire team. A lot of time, work, and money goes into building, developing,
and fielding a race car. One of the worst things a team can experience is going to the track and the car not performing.
Even with the issues, the experience could have been a lot worse. As someone once said, racing is a test in patience.
This weekend at MAM is a perfect example of that.
The next race for Co-op Racing will be at their local track located in Joliet, IL. Drivers Berberich and White instruct
with Laps Inc at Autobahn Country Club and have participated in several races as well. Autobahn is also the closest
track to Co-op Racing’s shop located just outside of Peoria, IL. The team would like to extend an offer to support
Berberich and White in Joliet for the July 21 and 22 races.
