Eurosport 944 Places 1st in Sprint Race at Autobahn Country Club
Joliet, IL - Co-op Racing's prayers were answered with good weather for Sunday's inaugural Sprint race with the Porsche Club of America (PCA). Returning from a wet enduro on Saturday, Co-op Racing was looking to improve on lap times and prove out the new shock settings from Friday night. At the completion of the 30 minute sprint race, the Eurosport Porsche 944 placed 1st in class while continually lowering lap times.

Sunday morning's practice was used to evaluate the new shock settings and to find the Eurosport 944's performance limit. The
Eurosport 944 was optimized to its limit considering the limited track time and adverse weather conditions. This allowed driver Andy Berberich to qualify first in class with the second place qualifier only 0.060 seconds behind. Even though there were only three 'I' class cars, the competition was still close.

The 30-minute sprint started Sunday afternoon under slight overcast skies, but a completely dry track. During the start, Berberich's primary goal was to keep the other two cars in class behind him. With only 0.060 seconds difference in qualifying times, passing would be very difficult. The race began as most do, with a flurry of activity. Fortunately, the first several laps went by without any problems. Within the first couple laps, the Eurosport 944 was passed by John Mueller in his Porsche 968 'F' class car. Mueller and Berberich had discussed racing lines and technique prior to the race and were beneficial for both drivers. The first 15 minutes of the race, Berberich was running down Mueller while keeping the other two 'I' cars at bay. Around this time in the race, a faster car that had spun out earlier in the race was making it's way back through the field. Prior to reaching the Eurosport 944, the higher class car had to make its way through the other two 'I' cars. The faster car went to make a pass on the inside of a turn and unintentionally crowded the second place 'I' car off the track. After this unfortunate incident, the pressure was off the Eurosport 944.

"Rainer (Dronzek) was pressuring me most of the race", Berberich reflected. "He would get a good run on me and I could tell he was getting quicker. There were parts of the track that I was faster and parts where he was faster. At one point in the race, I saw he was battling with a red car and I thought it was the other 'I' car. It ended up being another Porsche 968 and Rainer ended up off the track. The race was definitely exciting up until that point."

With a first place finish, Co-op Racing considers the weekend a success. The only complaint is the small class size, but the competition was still good. Hopefully the next race will produce more cars and more competition.

The next event for Co-op Racing and the Eurosport 944 is July 1 and 2 at the GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, MI for their third race with the Porsche Club of America. This will be another first time for Co-op Racing at a new track.
