Start of the 2008 Season in Sight of the “Gateway to the West”

Madison, IL – Co-op Racing kicked off their 2008 racing season within sight of the famed Gateway Arch of St Louis, MO at
Gateway International Speedway. The two days of racing was thankfully
uneventful for driver Andy Berberich and the Eurosport 944. Both days went by without mechanical or on travel issues. Unfortunately
the trend from the 2007 season continues with no participation in NASA’s 944 Cup class.
Prior to arriving at Gateway, the Eurosport 944 underwent repairs that occurred during the 2007 NASA Nationals at
Mid Ohio. A few of the repairs were made just prior to leaving for Gateway. Even with the hustled work and late nights, the Eurosport 944 ran flawlessly the
entire weekend.

Gateway was the first race of the 2008 NASA Midwest season. This was also a first for Berberich, but Collin Mizeur had been to Gateway several
times. The team chose to compete at Gateway because of its location and it was a relatively new track for the team. “I love and I hate new
tracks.” commented Berberich “New tracks are a lot of fun, but the very first session is usually aggravating. The first session is used to
learn the ways of the track and to try to determine the optimum line for the lowest lap times. For me, second session is where I can really
start putting the course together and then the lap times really start to fall.” With help from Mizeur, it didn’t take Berberich long to pick
up the pace.
Typical of the 2007 season, the Eurosport 944 was the only car in class. Gateway was no exception. A first in class is definitely a hallow victory
when you are the only car in class. Running in 944 Cup, the Eurosport 944 shared the track with Spec Miatas and Spec 944s. For the field of 20 cars,
Berberich started in the back in his own class and was forced to work his way through the field. This was excellent training for developing passing
experience and for learning patience. Due to the nature of the road course/oval configuration, most of the passing took place on the oval part of the
course.
The first race of the season was definitely a success. The Eurosport 944 ran great and is in a good position to race the rest of 2008.
Special thanks to Sean Clary who took the pictures posted for this event.
