Eurosport 944 Earns 4th Place Finish at Autobahn Country Club
Joliet, IL - Co-op Racing traveled to the Autobahn Country Club on Sunday, April 11th to compete in the first race of season for the Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs (MCSCC). After Returning from an excellent weekend in Georgia, Co-op Racing was looking to maintain the momentum. With these intentions, the Eurosport Porsche 944 placed 4th in class in a highly competitive field of 9 cars.

The structure for racing with MCSCC is typical of other events where multiple manufacturers are represented. The structure is that multiple classes are placed in the same run group and share time on the track. There are
typically six run groups scheduled for track time during one day of racing. For example, the Eurosport 944 competes in the ITS (Improved Touring S) class. This class shares the track with ITA, ITB, ITC, and Showroom Stock classes. The Eurosport 944 is prepared to PCA Club Racing rules in order to compete in its ‘I’ Class. It is also eligible to compete in ITS, but the ‘I’ class restrictions do not allow the car to be as competitive.

The Improved Touring and Showroom Stock classes were scheduled to take the track for practice in the first session of the day. Due to a long line at tech inspection, the Eurosport 944 was not able to run in the full 20-minute practice session at 8:30 am.

The Eurosport 944 headed out for its first on track session during qualifications at 10:45 am. With very little track time, Andy Berberich took the car to the track in order to quickly improve his track presence as well as attempt to turn a quick qualifying lap. Fortunately, less than a year earlier, Berberich had driven this same course during a motorcycle track day. This experience coupled with a proven car helped Berberich to qualify the Eurosport 944 fourth in run group and third in class.

Starting on the inside of row two, the Eurosport 944 was in a position to start up front and potentially stay up front. Berberich was able to advance one position on the start and maintain this advantage for a couple of laps. Approximately five laps into the race, the Eurosport 944 developed a push that progressively got worse as the race progress. "The car had a push in Atlanta," Berberich commented, "but it was nothing like this. Every time I would steer the car into the turn, it would want to keep going straight. I was not able to maintain my speed and had to modulate the throttle to keep the car under control." As the push worsened, the Eurosport 944 was passed for second place and then for third. While trying to maintain position and keep the car on the track, Berberich finished in a respectable fourth place in class and run group. Race results and lap times can be found at www.mylaps.com. Perform a search for Berberich and most previous races will be returned.

As the Eurosport 944 pulled off the track, George Weathered of Eurosport Racing checked the tire pressures. The tire pressures were extremely high and were the cause of the developing push. Like most race weekends, the lessons learned will be carried on and considered during weekends to come. Also in attendance to show their support for Co-op Racing was Julia Wallace, Rachel Nurnberger, Jamie Rife, and Bryan and Elaine White. Bryan also races a Pontiac Firebird with MCSCC.

The next event for Co-op Racing and the Eurosport 944 is May 13th and 14th at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in Mansfield, OH, for their second race with the Porsche Club of America. This will be another first time for Co-op Racing at a new track.
