Basking In The Sun At The 48 Hours Of Sebring

Sebring, FL – Now with 2006 behind Co-op Racing, it is time to look forward to 2007. The 2007 racing
season began with Co-op Racing team members Jason Hartnell and Andy Berberich attending the 48 Hours of
Sebring with Eurosport Racing. Hartnell and Berberich supported Eurosport Racing by providing crew chief
support for their drivers.
Jason Hartnell was responsible for drivers Bob Klaskin, Bill Craig, and Mike Faems. As the weekend progressed,
many of the drivers were becoming familiar with the track and lap times were dropping. Klaskin’s lap times seemed
to be positioning him for a potential podium finish. Unfortunately, his
|
weekend was ended early due to an on track
incident that resulted in a 13 month probationary period and the end of his race weekend. Bill Craig was another
driver who made improvements over the course of the weekend. Craig improved his lap times by over three seconds
per lap. His weekend ended with a horrific accident during the enduro, which totaled his racecar. Luckily, he was
not injured and above all, kept his spirits up. To conclude the weekend, Mike Faems entered the enduro with co-driver
Jeff Phillips. Faems and Phillips are members of the “Hey-Wait-For-Me” Racing Team. Their on track performance was
exceptional. However, the five minute mandatory pit stop took an additional two minutes due to a timer malfunction.
Their 8th place finish could have been closer to second or third if it wasn’t for the malfunction. Typical of racing,
some drivers find more success than others. The one constant, it’s never dull.
Andy Berberich was responsible for drivers Mike Walsdorf and Dave Varwig. Berberich was crew chief for Walsdorf
during the 2006 48 Hours of Sebring, where he was participating in drivers education. For 2007, this was his very
first PCA Club Race. “Transition from DE to racing was smooth for Mike” Berberich commented, “He is a very
conscientious driver and will keep out of trouble as a club racer.” The previous year, Walsdorf received driving
instruction from pro racer Randy Pobst. His best finish of the weekend was 13th, but the goal for all first time
racers is to finish the first race weekend without incident. Walsdorf accomplished this goal and is in good
position for the next race. Veteran driver Dave Varwig was also under the watchful eye of Berberich. His 6th
place finish was primarily due to driving consistently and cleanly during the 30 minute sprint race. His 7th
place enduro finish was the result of a team effort. During a full course yellow, Berberich called Varwig into
the pit when the field went back to racing. While the rest of the field was not yet at full speed, Varwig was
sitting in pit lane losing less time than if he had pitted under green. This strategy moved Varwig from 7th to 6th
place in class. This just goes to show that racing is also a sport of strategy.
Even though the 2007 season is not in full swing yet, it was a nice break for Hartnell and Berberich to venture south to
some warmer weather. The lessons learned from these types of events are priceless for Co-op Racing. The highlight
of the trip for Hartnell and Berberich was during track touring where drivers Faems and Walsdorf talked the two
through the racing line of Sebring. For a successful driver and crew chief relationship, this type of exposure is
essential.
